Understanding Medical Need for DNA Testing

By

Understanding genetics has led to a massive increase in the amount of knowledge that science possesses regarding the human condition and the factors behind human development. DNA and genes are the components which act as the building blocks of human life and these things also determine physical characteristics that a person will have. Some of these are fairly mundane such as the colour of a person's life and others are very serious such as genetic disease. Genetic DNA testing is a way in which doctors are able to utilise the information gained from analysing human DNA for use in diagnosing and treating serious health conditions.
Of all the fields of knowledge to benefit from the advances in genetic DNA testing, it can be argued that health and medicine is the one which has benefited most. Serious, heritable health conditions, such as Huntingdon's disease, can be found through the process of genetic DNA testing. This is literally a revolution in medical practice as in the past people would only be diagnosed with such conditions when they began to exhibit symptoms. This new, pre-symptomatic diagnosis allows both the doctor and the patient a lot of extra time to cope and treat any serious illnesses. In the case of conditions such as Huntingdon's, this can amount to years.
As well as being used to diagnose a condition before symptoms have been found, genetic DNA testing can also be used to confirm a diagnosis of existing symptoms. For example, if a patient had a range of symptoms which led a doctor to believe they may have a particular health condition, genetic DNA testing could be used to confirm or deny these suspicions one way or the other. This can allow a person to come to terms with their condition and begin to live with it.
Genetic DNA testing can also be used to make sure that people are biologically related to each other. There are many cases where the parent of a child claims that they are not the real parent. In the past this could be impossible and unscientific to try and figure out the truth of the matter. Now, a simple DNA sample from the two people followed by genetic DNA testing will allow a conclusive decision on whether two people are biologically related to be obtained. This can lead to the rightful payment of child support and better visitation rights, amongst other things.

How Does DNA Testing Work?

By

DNA testing is a big part of popular culture. TV shows often feature DNA tests in one form or another, whether it is part of a criminal investigation in a detective show or whether it is a shocking parentage test on a talk show. What these shows will almost always fail to explain is the real way that DNA testing works. Like many things in life it is the case with DNA testing that a test for DNA off the television screen often has far more dramatic and interesting results than its fictional counterparts.
The first aspect of a test for DNA is finding the correct DNA sample to conduct a test on. The sample that is required for a DNA test depends heavily upon the type of test that is taking place and what its intended outcomes are. For example, if the purpose of the test for DNA is to determine whether a child is biologically related to the Father he thinks he is, then samples of the DNA from both the child and the disputed Father will be needed. If the test for DNA is intended to determine whether DNA evidence found at a crime scene is a match for certain men then the sample from the crime scene will be needed as well as samples from all of the men that are suspects in the case.
The sample needed for a test for DNA can be very small. Using advanced scientific techniques even a small sample of DNA can be replicated into a large, repetitive sequence of the same DNA. This larger amount gives the testers a lot more freedom to conduct various tests as the material to work with is no longer as limited as it was. Only certain sections of the DNA will be cloned in that fashion as only part of a human's DNA is unique to them. It is essential to clone the unique portion as otherwise meaningless matches will be the result. This is due to the fact that humans share 99% of their DNA.
An important part of the test for DNA process is making sure that the DNA sample is not contaminated or damaged in some way. If other DNA is mixed in then the results will become meaningless and inadmissible in a court of law. Similarly, if DNA is not stored correctly it will break down and no longer be suitable for testing.
